KIAWAH ISLAND — Newberry College Richard Mansell shot under par in his first collegiate round to lead the Wolves to an 8-over par 296 in the opening round of the Kiawah Island Invitational on Monday. The Wolves were in 11th place in a highly competitive field for their first tournament of the 2013-14 season.
Mansell shot a 1-under par 71 on the course at Cougar Point GC to lead the Wolves in his initial round wearing scarlet and gray. He was in a tie for 16th place individually after the first round.
Fraser O’Connor shot a 1-over par 73 to tie for 35th, while Ryan Wilkinson is tied for 46th with a 3-over par 75. Tommy Hurst is tied for 57th with a 5-over par 77 and John Paul Ferguson is tied for 80th with a 9-over par 81.
Armstrong was in the lead for the team title entering the final round Tuesday, with an 11-under par 277, while North Alabama and hosts USC Aiken are five strokes behind the Pirates. The Wolves are only five strokes out of sixth place, but only three strokes ahead of 13th place in a remarkably tight field.
The tournament closed with 18 holes to be played on Tuesday.
