NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy swim team competed last week in a swim meets in Spartanburg and with 13 other SCISA teams in Hilton Head.

At the Hilton Head meet on Saturday, the boys’ team finished tied for third, but several swimmers qualified in events for the state meet. Most of the varsity boys qualified in eight events.

Seniors Jacob Epting, Daniel Shuler and Justin Suber and junior Dylan Skipper qualified in all the high school events. Swimmers with multiple cut times are Sean Blanton, CJ Connelly, Joshua Sawyer, Patrick Mills, Landen York and Matthew Cole.

Of the varsity girls, seniors Amanda Crayne and Rachel Buzhardt are working hard on getting many state qualifying times. Eighth-graders Amber Suber and Darby Dail are also making some state cut times.

The team has qualifying meets on Sept. 28 and Oct. 3 at Converse College with meets hosted by Spartanburg Day School. The SCISA State Swim Meet will be Oct. 12 at the Augusta Aquatic Center. The Newberry Academy boys’ team is the defending state champion in SCISA A/AA and hopes to make it four in a row.
