BATESBURG — The Newberry High School girls’ tennis team traveled to Batesburg-Leesville on Thursday to take on the Panthers in a region match-up.


The Lady Bulldogs came away with a closely contested win, defeating Batesburg-Leesville, 4-3. Newberry’s number 1 singles Hannah Carey defeated Batesburg’s Larrnisha Matthews 6-3, 6-0.


Newberry’s number 2 singles Sarah Jane Senn beat Sydnee Patrick 6-1, 6-0. The Bulldogs number 3 singles Amelia Foster won her match versus Shakeyma Irving 7-6, 6-4.


Batesburg-Leesville defeated Newberry’s numbers 4 and 5 singles players, BryShay Neal and Marianna Robertson, to cut into an early Newberry lead.


After Newberry’s number 2 doubles team of Tynasia Gladney and Itzel Espinosa lost a tough match, Newberry sealed the victory when the Bulldog’s number 1 doubles team of Carey and Senn defeated Batesburg 6-2, 6-0. Newberry, now 1-3 on the season, battles the top two teams in the region bac -to-back this week as they face Abbeville on Tuesday and Mid-Carolina on Wednesday.
