NEWBERRY — The Newberry College athletic department will attempt to set a new attendance record for a Division II field hockey game at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5. The Wolves host Limestone College in the program’s first-ever game.
The game will be the culmination of a series of events to boost spirit for a great 2013-14 athletic campaign at Newberry College. Following Wednesday’s “Welcome Back” pep rally, the season’s initial Coach Todd Knight Show on WKDK will originate from Setzler Field beginning at 7 p.m. The Athletic Club will provide refreshments in the Athletic Club parking lot prior to the game.
The Wolves and Saints will start their season at 7:30 p.m. and hope to end the night with the Division II attendance record. The all-time Division II record is 1,243 set in the 2009 NCAA semifinals, while the regular season record is 623.
Admission to all home field hockey games this season will be free.
“We are excited to start field hockey on our campus and we want to show the greater field hockey community how Newberry supports its student-athletes,” said director of athletics Matt Finley. “As the southernmost collegiate field hockey program in the nation, we feel that it is our responsibility to help this sport grow with enthusiasm.”
“I hope we see lots of scarlet and gray in the stands on Sept. 5,” said Catherine Somits, head field hockey coach. “While our sport may be unfamiliar to some fans, we hope they can support our team and learn about the game.”
