It is about this time every year each of us becomes aware of the fast approaching holiday season. It is my belief that most of us are procrastinators, which means we have not even considered the benefits of shopping early. I mean, why? We have plenty of time, right? Then somebody dares to remind us that we have less than 40 days until Christmas, and all of a sudden, we are in panic mode.
We keep asking ourselves, “Why did I wait so long?” Then we counter by promising ourselves, “This will never happen again. Next year I will be ready.”
We are no different here at your Chamber. Even though we have been busy planning the Downtown Merchants Window decorating contest, the Christmas Lights of Newberry County, and the Christmas Tour of Homes, the timing still surprised us when all of a sudden Joyce Vigus and her team of volunteers, along with City of Newberry personnel, commenced installing decorations around our fair city.
Then just as volunteers were putting the finishing touches of wrapping greenery and lights around the columns at Community Hall, the tree arrived on Thursday and immediately, Joyce’s group set out decorating and turning the 20 foot bare tree into a magical Christmas fairy land.
All of this promises to come to life on Friday, Nov. 22 at dusk, when the Mayor of Newberry leads our citizens in counting down to zero, magically lighting all the Christmas lights in the City of Newberry and declaring the Christmas season to be in full swing. We expect the evening to be wonderful, filled with carolers, seasonal goodies, and the downtown merchants remaining open until 8 pm.
So, what about you? Are you ready for the upcoming holiday season? What a wonderful time of year. Thanksgiving is such a special time for families, getting together and sharing their love. It is also a time to bring out those recipes that are saved for special occasions.
A word of caution though, should you be one of those opting to get a head start on your Christmas list by taking advantage of the early bargains when the clock strikes midnight ushering in Black Friday: Save a portion of the day to rest, and even though the holiday food is so tempting, do not overeat. Those shopping lines can be brutal, even when you are fully rested.
Please be patient and remember the reason each of us should enjoy this special time. Whether it be the fact we celebrate the end of the harvest season (Thanksgiving) or the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ (Christmas), please take time to consider who you are and what your legacy will be.
By the way, Chamber memberships make wonderful gifts. So while you are downtown looking at the lights and shopping, why not stop by your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce and make 2014 the year you become a member? You will not believe the benefits of Chamber membership. We are located in Community Hall, just behind the gorgeous Christmas tree, and we can’t wait to see you.
Should you have questions, call 803-276-4274 and let either Liz, Michelle or me tell you why you should support your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce.
