Last weekend America celebrated Labor Day, a holiday weekend where across our country festivities seem to set in motion the last of our summer holidays, signaling the end of summer and the beginning of fall.

By now, every school is back to “business as usual,” fall sports are in full swing, and our teachers are challenging our youth. Now, if you were to ask people that know me if I enjoy sports, they might say that I am a fanatic. Let me just say that I enjoy almost any kind of sporting event, and I truly appreciate coaches, especially those that also encourage our youth to excel in the classroom, because it is education that will enable our young adults to succeed. I simply cannot understand why so many parents believe education is secondary because their child is going to be a professional athlete, when less than one percent of our youth make it to the professional level.

Teachers help shape our youth. They present new ideas and challenge our youth to expand their world, which enables each bright young adult to develop and increase their knowledge. Many of these teachers often use their own money to help those students that simply do not have the items needed in their respective classes. So, it is to the teachers across America that I ask everyone to say, “Thank you for your dedication to our youth.”

Here in Newberry County, your Chamber is working to provide needed items in many of the classrooms at the Newberry County Career Center because we realize our assistance will enable our youth to graduate with a trade. Many of these young adults will be rewarded with local employment, thus allowing our county to retain our youth and encourage future growth.

What we are doing at the Career Center is just another reason for you to get involved in your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce. Why not stop by our office at 1209 Caldwell St., Community Hall, or call 276-4274 and ask Liz, Michelle, or me why your membership is so very important to the future of Newberry County.

September offers several learning opportunities that you can enjoy. This weekend you can attend Newberry Ag Expo at the Newberry County Fairgrounds, learn all about the rich agricultural history of the county, run a 5K, attend rodeos and a car show, and enjoy food, entertainment, and crafts.

On Thursday, Sept. 26 you can attend Newberry Business Alliance’s BBQ at Wells Point Drive in Prosperity and learn how local leaders are addressing area concerns. On the morning of Saturday, Sept. 28 you can attend Health Fair 2013 at Springfield Place, receive free health screenings, and gather a wealth of knowledge from various health care experts. Newberry County has a great deal to offer if you only look around.
