The following incidents were reported by Newberry City Police:
— Michael Dove, 35, of 70 S. Lyle Lane, Lavonia, Ga., was charged with shoplifting on June 5. Newberry City Police were contacted by Walmart Security about a shoplifter who was running from the store with stolen items. Officers spotted Dove near the car wash and took him into custody. Items stolen included shotgun shells, fishing lures, ink pens, and a note pad. Dove was taken to the Newberry County Detention Center.
— John Downing, 47, of 300 Saraland Ave., #44, Saraland, Ala., was charged with drug/narcotic violations and driving under the influence on June 6. Officers observed Downing traveling near the intersection of First and Nance streets. The truck changed lanes and turned several times without using a turn signal. After initiating a traffic stop, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverages about Downing’s person in which he was given several field sobriety tests. Officers also recovered a Lortab in Downing’s right pants pocket. He did not have a prescription for the drug.
— Bill Watts Jr., 46, of 203 Hardeman St., Newberry, was charged with shoplifting on June 6. Officers responded to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. Officers saw Watts on video selecting a case of Natural Light and concealing it under his shirt before leaving the store. Officers found him in his front yard drinking Natural Light beer. The incident report described Watts as very intoxicated. He admitted to concealing the beer underneath his shirt.
