NEWBERRY — Ervin West, director of facilities management, presented updates to the Newberry County Council’s Public Safety and Courts Committee on renovations occurring with county facilities.
Renovations at the Newberry County Courthouse are going well and the contractor is making good progress, West said. The installation of drywall, the electrical work and scaffolding of the ceiling are all underway, while the reframing of doors is nearly complete.
The damaged walls of the courthouse have received their first coat of paint and the paint is covering all the damage well, making the need for wallpaper unnecessary. The installation of hardwood floors started Monday, while the exterior waterproofing should start Aug. 18.
Renovations for the Whitmire Fire Department on the electrical work, plumbing and the upstairs offices are almost complete.
The work on the Whitmire Rescue/EMS building is also near completion. The telephone lines are in but the cable installation has stalled because the building is a mile and a half outside the service area of the provider they planned to use.
“We are now currently looking for a new provider,” said West.
West also said he met with Duke Power on exterior lighting, and it was decided that lighting will be placed around the building. The monthly bill should be under $100.
Outside construction started this week on the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Irrigation, pulling up outside bricks and clean up of the old trailer park site have all begun. The flag pole has been put up, but the brick base will not be installed until the brick mason returns from vacation.
