Hello everyone, is it spring yet? I ask myself and you that question each year. Now that the holidays are behind us, I am ready for spring planting and flowers, and front and back porch “settin.” If we ain’t going to get a “good snow” then let’s go and get sprung on spring. By the way or BTW in social media shorthand, a good snow in Whitmire means school closings for 2–4 days, no trips, and your vehicle stuck in your driveway.

ATVs please, no risky driving on 72 or 121 due to rural roads are treated and scraped last. The last “Good Un” in 2011. So here’s wishing for a “Good Un” before Gottrocks the birthday fairy brings in Spring in the form of pollen on his wings. She weighed in at 6 pounds and 8 ounces. Whitmire area grandparents are Angie and Randy Gilliam and Great Grandparents Harold and The Late Peggy L. Gilliam. We send our best feel good wishes and Speedy recovery to: Jimmy Hollingsworth, William Worthy, and Marty Mcmurtury.

In upcoming events, a fundraiser chicken stew at Evans Street Church Of God will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m. Otis Jenning’s Famous chicken stew will sell out fast. The price is $5 per quart. Pick up will be in the church social hall. Call Otis and Elaine Jennings at 803694-3633 or the pastor’s residence at 803-694-3401.

The Whitmire Economic Development Board members will host their first event, “The Tag Sale aka indoor yard sale Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m. at the Whitmire community center. A few spaces are left, at $10 dollars per space. The kitchen area has been rented out and refreshments will be available. The proceeds from the sale will be used for the board’s economic projects, such as the beautification of certain areas of town.

The events include a health walk, a breast cancer awareness event, a July 19 Veterans Day celebration on Main Street, and a concert type outdoor event.

The Tyger Enoree River Alliance news according Jon Durham, Coordinator, said “The FCC granted a low power FM radio frequency to the non profit group based in Whitmire.” The dial position will be 96.5 FM. It will feature local programming based around TERA. Fundraisers are planned in the near future. The group has handmade artisans gifts for sale and are on display at the TERA Office located at the west end of Main Street.

Members of First Baptist Church have been busy lately with trustee and deacon elections, and plans to attend for the 2014 Women’s Conference in Maggie Valley.

The first ever father and daughter dance is planned for February 22 at the Whitmire Community Center. This is a fundraiser for the Whitmire recreation department. Rev. Todd Johnson is the guest speaker. Refreshments and a photo booth will be available. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at Joe’s Market.
