NEWBERRY — After his first year as Newberry College’s president, Dr. Maurice Scherrens likes what he’s seeing.

“Newberry College is moving in the right direction,” Scherrens said. “Students are getting more involved. The freshman class had a 12 percent increase over the previous year. Newberry College is making improvements to benefit the students.”

Some of these improvements are already making a difference to students. Scherrens said one of the most significant changes is the recent opening of the Eco Grounds Coffee Shop in Kaufmann Hall.

“Eco Grounds provides the students a venue to eat when the cafeteria is closed,” he said.

However, Scherrens is aware of many areas where the college needs improvement. After a recent trip to River Bluff High School in Lexington, Scherrens realized Newberry College’s classrooms needed help.

“Students come from high schools with advanced technology,” he said. “It should be the same, if not better, when they get to college.”

Scherrens said he knows Newberry’s classrooms are technologically behind, but he is determined to catch them up.

Other improvements Scherrens hopes to implement include a renovation of the Science and Mathematics Building, with a new facility for the Nursing program. A renovation of Setzler Field is also in the works.

Members of the college community are responding to the improvements they have seen since Scherrens took office. Among them is student Erin Eisenhauer, who says, “I love the direction that Newberry College is heading.”

“Newberry College is full of dedicated faculty and students who are willing to make a difference,” Scherrens said. “I’m simply giving them the tools they need.”
