Whitmire’s first-graders learned about fire safety from Phillip Wicker, a Clinton Firefighter, who came and spoke to both classes about ways to be safe at home and at school. He discussed the need for smoke alarms in every home and the importance of having a family meeting place outside and to practice fire drills at home as well at school. Wicker brought his turn-out gear for students to observe. He dressed in his gear to show them what a firefighter may look like if he ever had to come into their house to save them. He taught them about what to do if their clothes ever caught on fire and how to crawl low under smoke.
