In upcoming community events, TERA (Tyger-Enoree River Alliance) has announced its 2013 Fall Concert Series. The concerts are free and are an educational series with a variety of genres: folk/Americana, bluegrass, country and blues. The concerts will held on Saturdays, at 5 p.m. in The Strand Amphitheater in Heritage Park.
The park is located behind Park Street Community Center and the Gilliam Street entrance is the stage area. Bring chairs, blankets and have fun. TERA Coordinator Jon Durham has a TERA Tailgate special: free hot dogs to concert attendees. Parking is available on Main Street and in The Community Center Parking lot.
The Main Street Yard Sale is scheduled for Oct. 12 from 7 a.m. to noon. The yard sale is a great way to make money for civic, school and church groups. Only pre-packed food items are allowed. The Whitmire Jaycees are the sponsors. Contact them on their Facebook organization page or e-mail them at email@example.com
The Sept. 13 sign dedication at Legends Stadium, formerly Wolverine Stadium, went really well. Several alumni came to town to see their former coaches, teachers and principals honored. The three men — “Lefty” Johnson, Kenneth Coleman and The late Irby Raines Jr. — were father figures to many students in their 40 plus years at Whitmire area schools. It was like traveling down memory lane seeing all of their family members together near the sign in the northeast goal.
Kitcy and Hollis Johnson, Phyllis, Mark, Abby and Chris Raines, plus Eddie Raines and his sons Maguire and Cooper, along with Martha and Ken Coleman. Several former WHS athletes and alumni stopped by sitting area to say hello. We saw Tony Evans, Robert Jones, Jim Suber, Jesse Baker, Joey Dillard, Sam Lake, Gigi G. Garner, and Randall Frye.
The programs with the three men’s photos on the front were going fast, ands some of us made photos of the program to post on Facebook. Thanks to Assistant Principal and Whitmire native Martha Suber and several faculty members for coordinating the event. The Wolverines wore their new home colors of Blue and Gold uniforms, and the WCS Royal Regiment Marching Band presented another super halftime show.
The official day for Halloween and Trick or Treating will be Oct. 26 and the WHS Booster Club will host the annual Halloween Carnival on Oct. 26 at the city gym downtown. Trunk Or Treating is welcome. Individuals and civic groups who want to decorate their car trunks and dispense candy and treats are welcome to park on Main Street. The TERA concerts will be going on at the park, as the Halloween activities will keep Main Street busy. The WHS Athletic Booster Club has a new Facebook page. Click on ‘like’ to support the page.
