NEWBERRY COUNTY — The Newberry County School District Board of Trustees honored a multitude of students for their achievements from around the district during their monthly meeting.

First up were two athletes from Mid-Carolina High School. Elizabeth Hunter was recognized for being named the Class AAA Competitive Cheer Player of the Year.

“Elizabeth was selected by the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports as the Class AAA Competitive Cheer Player of the Year,” said Pam Arrington, executive director of Human Resources with the District.

Elise Mills was recognized for the following achievements in tennis, South Carolina AAA State Single’s Girls Tennis Champion, Sportsmanship Award Winner, North-South Tennis Team, All-State, Class AAA Tennis Player of the Year.

“Congratulations to Elise Mills. Elise won the South Carolina AAA State Single’s Girls Tennis Tournament and was named the Sportsmanship Award Winner. Elise qualified and played in the SCHSL State Singles’ Tournament on November 27 and 28. She defeated all other competitors and secured her place as the AAA Girls Tennis State Champion. This marks her fourth individual state championship. Elise was also named North/South All Star for Girls Tennis. Elise was also selected by the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports as the Class AAA Tennis Player of the Year,” Arrington said.

Next up was Braxton Neal at Newberry Middle School. Neal won the Relay for Life T-Shirt Design contest for our region. Out of 172 entries from students in Newberry, Abbeville, McCormick, Greenwood and Edgefield counties, Neal was the winner.

Also at NMS, Abigail Corbett was recognized for winning first place in Digital Art at the South Carolina Junior Beta Club Convention.

“The Newberry Middle School Junior Betas attended the South Carolina Junior Beta Convention in January. There were nearly 3,500 students at the convention in Myrtle Beach- the state’s largest to date,” Arrington said. “Congratulations to Abigail Corbett on her first place entry in Digital Art. She has been invited to the National Convention this June in Oklahoma.”

Mid-Carolina Middle School also had students recognized for placing during the Junior Beta Convention. MCMS Beta Club brought home nine state awards. The following received an award and invitation to Beta Nationals.

For first place seventh grade Math – Jack Gantt; first place Three Dimensional Design – Ella Morales, Kendellin Haltiwanger, Rachel Redd, Hannah Hamilton and Hannah Perkins; second place Sculpture – Isabella Ferreira; second place Digital photo – Emma Jacobs; third place Speech – Lyle Fulmer; third place Quiz Bowl – Katy Mae Crooks, Justin Smith, Madelyn Coker and Jack Gantt.

From Whitmire Community School, Becca Egan was recognized as a S.C. Junior Beta State sponsor.

“Ms. Egan will serve two years as the South Carolina Junior Beta State sponsor. She will work with officers and sponsors across the state, hosting the State Convention and serving as an advisor on the State Council,” Arrington said.

Hugh Gray was the last recognition of the night, he was recognized for his eight years of loyal dedicated service to The School District of Newberry County.

In other business:

• The Board approved the first reading of the updated Medical Homebound Instruction Policy, which updated the language.

• The Board approved five policy changes to policy that were changed due to the Expansion of the S.C. Pregnancy Act which adds childbirth and any related medical condition.
