The winner of the first “Where’s Super Johnnie?” challenge is Jessica R. Shealy. She correctly identified Margaret Hunter Park on Nance Street across from Newberry Elementary School.
Margaret Hunter Park is home to Newberry’s only disc golf course. The 12-hole course winds through the large pines in the park. The first tee can be accessed on Pope Terrace across from the old Speers Street School.
The park is named for Margaret Hunter, who graduated from Elizabeth College in Charlotte, N.C. During her time in Newberry, she was actively engaged in local community work. She was president of the Newberry Civic League, chair of the City Board of Health, state chair of Conservation and Thrift and a member of the Newberry Tree Commission.
As a member of the local Red Cross unit, she served during and after World War I. She was effective in pushing for state laws for the betterment of the community, one of which was the Standard Milk Ordinance. She died on March 17, 1934, at her home on Caldwell Street.
The information on Mrs. Hunter was gathered from “Newberry County, South Carolina: Historical and Genealogical Annals” by George Leland Summer.
