SIMPSONVILLE — Southside Christian rattled its Sabres Monday night and sent the Whitmire Wolverines packing with a 10-1 defeat in baseball playoff action.
Four Wolverine pitchers, Malik Whitener, Logan McMellon, Alex Ellison and West Jenkins took the hill.
Whitener, a junior, gave up two runs on the night.
Sophomore Alex Ellison was touched up for six runs and sophomore West Jenkins was tagged for two runs.
Ellison struggled with control, walking four batters while striking out three. The Wolverines gave up seven of the free 90s on the night, a cardinal sin in baseball, particularly on the road in the playoffs.
Southside made Whitmire pay early as the Sabres jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead. They led 9-0 in the top of the sixth before Whitmire managed to break up the shutout.
It was the only run the Wolverines could muster for the game. Leading hitters were Alex Ellison,( 2-4 with a double and run scored) and Chrise Keisler (1-3 with an RBI).
Whitmire defeated Williston-Elko 1-0 Saturday afternoon to advance to the match-up with Southside in an elimination game.
Sophomore Austin Jenkins pitched a complete game one-hitter for the win, walking three and striking out 15.
Chase Hood drove in the only run of the game.
Other hitters for Whitmire were Jacob Robertson (1-3), Chris Keisler (1-3), Cole Whitmire (1-3), and West Jenkins (1-2 with a run scored).
