NEWBERRY — Community members and local leaders gathered in Memorial Park on Sunday to celebrate the Newberry High School Bulldogs 2014 AA State Championship in basketball.
A few hundred people gathered in the town square to hear from local politicians, such as Rep. Walt McLeod, Mayor Foster Senn, Sheriff Lee Foster, Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler and NHS head coach Chad Cary among others.
The NHS Color Guard and chorus presented the colors and sang the national anthem, respectively.
During the ceremony, Jimmie Coggins informed the crowd of another way the Bulldog championship was record setting, in addition to being the first school state championship since 1981.
The 30-point margin of victory by NHS over Lake Marion High was the largest in South Carolina State Championship Game history, according to the South Carolina High School League.
McLeod announced that the team will be honored April 8 by the Senate and the House.
City Council members and Senn announced a sign will be placed along I-26 for the next year that will announce the team as state champions.
