PROSPERITY — One person was killed and another wounded during early Sunday morning during an altercation at a large block party on Rikard School Road.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said that Zemeckis Monteco Devante Houston, 19, of Newberry was killed around 2:20 a.m. Sunday by an apparent gunshot wound.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster is asking for any witnesses to come forward and provide information on what led to the shooting.
“Someone’s life was lost during this party,” Foster said. “If this were your loved one, you would want someone to do the right thing and come forward so the perpetrator can be brought to justice.”
According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call about traffic congestion and noise and found the road blocked. As deputies attempted to get to the party, shots were fired.
A large crowd, estimated to be well over 100 people, began running from the scene. Once deputies made it through the crowd, they found Houston with a wound to his head.
Deputies were told another person had been shot and was being transported by private vehicle to the hospital.
Prosperity Rescue and Newberry County EMS also responded to the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning in Newberry.
