PORT AU PRINCE, HAITI — On Saturday, June 21, Dr. Mike and Karin White, their daughters Leanna and Lauren, Rachel and Levi Hoover (Clewiston, Fla.) and Brother Tom Dorsey traveled to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti to do medical mission work.

The trip is a medical mission outreach Missions of Love for Haiti, a local non-profit organization.

The $5000 raised during a walk-a-thon this spring combined with medical donations from area opthamologists and pharmacies as well as individuals and First Baptist Church of Newberry to help equip the group on its three-fold educational, medical and spiritual outreach.

According to Karin White, the trip began with a stop at Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-Au-Prince where Dr. Michael White and crew made connections related to wound care, one of White’s specialties. He spoke with administrators about wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, since the hospital currently lacks hyperbaric capabilities.

The group also decorated the auditorium for a three-hour kindergarten graduation service. Part of Mission4Haiti’s purpose is funding a school in the area.

“We rejoiced as 23 of ‘our’ kindergartners were promoted to the first grade,” Karin White said.

Living out the Great Commission

The educational component is part of the group’s mission to work as it understands it to fulfill the calling of The Great Commission from Matthew 28:19.

“We help feed children, widows, families and churches,” White said, “as we work to share Christ’s love and salvation story with everyone.”

The volunteers also prepared supplies for a two-day medical clinic, making both mother and baby care packs. They used supplied arranged by Brother Anderson Higgins who arrived the previous Monday to collect barrels from the port and to distribute the goods to the pastors and orphanages.

Despite a rainy Tuesday morning, they opened the clinic at 9 a.m. and ended at 4:30 p.m. During that time the group saw 202 patients and White said she was so busy that they forgot to eat lunch.

They took names so patients he was unable to see Tuesday could be treated Wednesday and White said early Wednesday morning they were met by patients who were anxiously waiting at the gate of the school.

That day the group saw 268 patients.

White said, “The total for two days of clinic with one doctor was 470 patients and five people accepted Christ. Dr. Mike took the time to examine all of the patients, listen to their concerns and give them the medicines that they needed. We treated many skin infections and gave vitamins to everyone.”

On Thursday, the group gave away clothes, diapers, food, blankets and pillowcase dresses to the families and patients at the General Hospital in Les Cayes.

Missions of Love for Haiti volunteers also donated medical supplies to the pediatrician on call.

White said the last day in Les Cayes they donated pillowcase dresses, bras, shoes, purses, clothes and underwear to the less fortunate.

“Thank you to everyone who donated supplies, funds and who faithfully prayed for us,” she said.

Mission complete, but work continues

Though the group has returned from the mission trip, its work continues.

And White said it is Time For Change, a fundraiser where they are asking people to collect their loose change for four weeks and at the end of that time period to collect the change and send a check to Missions of Love –Haiti 182 Hunter Lane Prosperity, SC 29127

“We serve 5,000 meals per month at Missions of Love Haiti school in Haiti,” White said, “and YOU can feed a child for $0.33 per day.”

Proceeds help with school costs for 2014-15.

Other fund raising efforts include a July 19 hot dog plate and rummage sale from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Open Bible Church 104 Dixie Dr, Saluda, SC 29138.

Plates include two grilled hot dogs, beans, chili and a drink. For more information call Karin White at 940-6420 or see www.missionsoflovehaiti.com.
