NEWBERRY — It won’t be cruel or step on any blue suede shoes, but the South Carolina Elvis Festival hopes to leave Newberry’s Elvis fans united in being all shook up.

“I think Elvis’ memory creates an international family as a fan base,” said Terry Futreal, production assistant for Elvisfestival.com.

For the second consecutive year, the South Carolina Elvis Festival will take place in Newberry.

“Jason Sherry, who owns Sherry Management Elvisfestival.com series of events, has been doing this for a long time up north,” Futreal said. “I’m from South Carolina, so I wanted one in South Carolina.”

Futreal said it took some searching, but she settled on Newberry as a perfect location.

The festival takes place Sept. 11 through Sept. 13 at the Newberry Opera House.

“Our festival is four days, it’s unique in the state of South Carolina,” Futreal said. “I’m already planning Year three.”

The festival schedule begins with a free opening ceremony Thursday outside of the Opera House at 7 p.m.

It includes reflections on the impact of Elvis, tribute artist contests, Elvis dinner hours at The Flying Pie, a Gospel contest to support Boys Farm and headlining concerts.

“Different artists from around the country enter the competition, and we always try to have different headliners,” Futreal said.

2014 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of Elvis’ first single, so the headlining concerts will reflect that passage of time in two parts.

“Here’s this bigger than life icon that has long since passed away, and yet, his legacy and memory continue to live on,” Futreal said.

The headliners for this year’s festival include some of the most decorated Elvis tribute artists in the world.

“This year we’re bringing Cody Slaughter and Dean Z,” Futreal said. “Cody Slaughter is only 24, and he’s the youngest to every win the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist World Champion.”

Futreal said the headlining concerts should be a festival highlight.

“The level of production is amazing,” Futreal said. “We want to present to the audience the truest of illusions, allowing them to relive the magic of Elvis: live and onstage.”
