NEWBERRY — A silver truck struck a utility pole near the intersection of Main Street and Jones Street.
According to medics on the scene the driver of the truck is OK, although he suffered minor injuries.
“He had some scratches on his arm but wasn’t really hurt,” said Jimmy Hael, medic for Newberry Emergency Medical Services.
Hazel said when the truck struck the pole it caused the transformer near the top of the pole to fall through the truck’s windshield.
“He had that big transformer land in the truck next to him,” Hazel said. “He’s lucky.”
Hazel said the driver of the vehicle said he lost control of his truck after losing consciousness, but was conscious when EMS arrived slightly before 11 a.m.
“The only thing he told us is he passed out,” Hazel said.
Hazel said the driver of the vehicle was transported by ambulance to a Richland County hospital, because of loss of consciousness prior to the accident and the severity of the accident.
“They’re taking him to a trauma center,” Hazel said.
No one at the scene of the accident saw it happen.
“The only thing we know is he was coming down Main and hit a utility pole,” Brian Beck, senior engineer for Newberry Fire Department. “He hit it hard.”
The truck and the utility pole were badly damaged in the accident.
“It did not look pretty over there,” said Gary Roberts, engineer for NFD.
Marc Regier, utility director for the City of Newberry said the utility pole will be removed, but it will not affect utility service in the area.
