WHITMIRE — The Whitmire Economic Development Board has a lot of plans in the works for the town, including Art in the Park, a Pink Walk in October and opening of a restaurant on Union Highway.

During Monday’s Town Council meeting, board member Maria Mcmurtury presented council with several upcoming projects and ideas the group had been working on during Monday’s meeting.

First is the opening of the County Line Restaurant on Union Highway at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 21. Mcmurtury invited all residents to attend and meet owner William Graham.

On Aug. 23, Whitmire will host Art in the Park from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. in Heritage Park. Mcmurtury said there will be arts and crafts booths along with Christian music from local churches and citizens.

“We’re struggling to get singers, but we will have some,” Mcmurtury told council.

The Economic Development Board also has started its fundraising effort for the Susan G. Komen Pink Walk on Oct. 4. Events will be held throughout town, including pink pancakes at County Line Restaurant from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sign in for the walk will be at 9:30 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11 a.m.

Mcmurtury said the Pink Princess and Prince contest results and awards will be at 10 a.m. Awards will be given out at 12:30 p.m. for the team that raises the most money for the event. T-shirts will also be sold.

Coinciding with the Pink Walk event, Mcmurtury said a “hanging of the bras” will be held Aug. 28 on Main Street to raise money for breast cancer research. It will cost $5 to “hang a bra” across the street.

Mcmurtury also said the board would like to set up meetings to research putting in a river front park, boat access and water park on 45 acres behind the town’s golf course.

Mayor Billy Hollingsworth said the group’s first step needs to be checking with Duke Power to get the right of way before going any further with planning.

Mcmurtury said the group would also like to meet with the non-profit organization of South Carolina Nature Based Tourism Association concerning their tourism efforts and how to continue promoting tourism in Whitmire.
