PROSPERITY — The 2014 Palmetto Girls State was held June 8 through June 14 at Presbyterian College in Clinton. Those who attended this year were:

Mid-Carolina High: Jenna Michelle Bodie, Alaina Shealy, Bailey Lou Doolittle, Meagen Wise and Jennifer Joanna Shealy.

Newberry Academy: Emma Elizabeth Lindsay and Emily Harris Senn

Newberry High School: Kenley Camille Longshore, Bailey Humphries, Hetal Patel, Eva Karen Torres and Sarah Jane Senn.

Whitmire Community School: Amy Madilyn Andrews, Noel Nicole King, Bethany Leanne Cromer and Ursula Means.

The purpose of Palmetto Girls State is to “educate our youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.”

In the mythical state of “Palmetto,” the delegates (also referred to as the citizens of “Palmetto”) organize the cities, counties and the state of “Palmetto” and choose the forms of government and officials for the cities, counties and state.

It is hoped the girls will return to their high schools and communities steeped in the doctrines of equal opportunity for all, freedom of thought, speech, and religion, and the ability to live and work harmoniously with others.
