NEWBERRY — The Southern Barbecue Network kicked off Newberry’s annual Pork in the Park event Saturday, with 15 teams competing for the overall grand champion title.
This year was the first year the organization ran the event, with the City of Newberry having done the event in previous years.
Five of the 15 teams were from Newberry, with one team from North Carolina, and the rest from South Carolina. Pork in the Park teams competed in three different meat categories — Boston butt, chicken and ribs. Prizes went to the first, second and third place winners in each category, as well as to the competition grand champion.
In the Boston butt category, Boar’s Nest took first place, with Biggy Boy’s BBQ taking second place. On the Spot BBQ placed third.
On the Spot BBQ placed first in the chicken category, while Kickin’ Ash placed second. Boar’s Nest came in third place.
Skinny Rick’s BBQ took home first place in the ribs category. Ben’s Fine Swine placed second and Biggy Boy’s took home third place.
The overall grand champion for the competition was On the Spot BBQ. Third place winners received a cash prize of $125, second place received $250, with first place winners receiving $400. The cash prize for the grand champion was $500. Each of the winning teams also received trophies.
