NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry’s youth baseball and softball teams started their seasons this week in new Major League and Minor League replica uniforms.

The uniforms are part of the enhancements the youth sports programs are experiencing as a result of a recent fee increase.

City Council approved the new fees last December. They went into effect Jan. 1.

“The new Major League and Minor League replica uniforms have been a hit so far. They are the first of the enhancements people will see in our youth league programs,” said PRT Director Scott Sawyer.

While most people might be familiar with the Major League teams, the Pre-T, T-Ball and Training League teams have introduced some names that might not be quite as familiar from Minor League baseball teams.

Teams such as the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Lansing Lugnuts and Charleston Riverdogs are a few that have made an appearance on the Pre-T, T-Ball and training league teams.

Other replica uniforms created were that of the Atlanta Braves and the Baltimore Orioles.

“So far the feedback I’ve received from the coaches is that they like them and think they really look good,” said Program Manager Johnnie Caldwell.
