NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry will host its annual Irish Fling on Friday and Saturday in Downtown Newberry, which will be decked out for the celebration.

Mary Alex Kopp, tourism and events coordinator for the city, said all of downtown’s sit-down restaurants and bars are participating and bringing something festive to their tables. Many of the restaurants and bars also have live entertainment planned.

So why an Irish Fling in Newberry? Kopp said that although there are no heritage ties to Newberry, she felt most of the community liked the idea of having something to celebrate during March.

“I think people will realize that there’s plenty to do right here in Newberry if they take the time to look,” Kopp said.

Figaro’s, one of the newest restaurants downtown, will offer a less expensive menu, family atmosphere, and St. Patrick’s Day menu items that will include Dublin Coddle and Shepherd’s Pie. The restaurant will also have Irish dancers to entertain guests.

Pour Richard’s will have a DJ playing Irish hits, while Bar III will have Soul Fish playing live. Bubba’s Beer Parlor will also be participating with special themed items.

Kopp said the Irish Fling offers a nice circle starting in Astwood Park and making its way down Main Street.

“There’s a good variety of things for couples to do, families, and college students as well,” Kopp said.

Kopp said those coming downtown for the festivities should stop by Astwood Park first at the event’s ID station.

Newberry CAST Coalition will be checking IDs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and those of age will be given a wristband, allowing them to walk down Main Street with alcohol. Although the wristbands are not required to be served in the bars, no one will be allowed to walk down the street with alcohol unless wearing a wristband, Kopp said.

Alcohol will be allowed from 5 p.m. until midnight. Unlike other events held downtown, Main Street will not be blocked off.

Another fun fact about this year’s Irish Fling is that anyone wearing green can stop by the event station in Astwood Park to register to win a $20 gift card to Figaro’s restaurant or a $25 gift card to Steven W’s.

“Because it’s supposed to be festive, I thought the raffle would be a good addition this year,” Kopp said.

Kopp also said Hampton Inn is offering a discounted rate for those who mention the Irish Fling when booking their rooms. Only a limited number of discounted rooms are available.
