NEWBERRY — Officials have not determined the cause of a three-car train derailment that occurred around 9:40 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Colony Church Road and U.S. 76 (C.R. Koon Highway).
The train was switching cars when three of them came off the tracks, Sheriff Lee Foster said.
Foster said the derailment occurred on a side track. No injuries were reported. The train cars were carrying paper products and were of no threat to the community or surrounding areas.
One eastbound lane of U.S. 76 remained closed for safety reasons until 1 p.m. Thursday, as released from the S.C. Department of Transportation. While the lane was closed, Foster said the track was inspected for any damages.
As of Thursday afternoon, Foster said CSX had not determined the cause of the derailment, but were hypothesizing probable causes.
Prosperity Fire department, Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, CSX and the S.C. Highway Patrol responded to the scene Monday.
