NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry will once again kick off its Family Movie Night series Jan. 31 with Man of Steel. The movie will be shown at the Newberry Opera House.
The free movie will begin at 7 p.m. and is the first of three Family Movie Nights this winter. The other two additional movies in the winter series will be on Feb. 21, and March 21. The movies for the other showings have not yet been chosen.
Man of Steel, which premiered in 2013, tells the story of a young itinerant worker who is forced to confront his secret extra-stellar origin when Earth is invaded by members of his own race. Man of Steel was directed by Zack Snyder.
Scott Sawyer, director of parks, recreation, and tourism for the City of Newberry, said they try to wait as long as possible when choosing the movies shown, in order to get the most recent releases.
“When the most recent releases don’t appear to fit the ‘family’ type movie we like to show, we try to select the best and most recent ones available,” Sawyer said.
Seating for Family Movie Night will be general admission and no tickets will be distributed in advance, according to Sawyer. Sawyer advises the community to plan on arriving early, as the seating capacity is limited.
Complimentary soft drinks and popcorn will be served during intermission. The refreshments are being donated by Newberry First Baptist Church and Hardee’s of Newberry.
“The family movie nights have been a success,” Sawyer said. “We are excited to be able to offer them and appreciate being able to partner with the Newberry Opera House. We also are thankful that First Baptist Church has agreed to staff the intermission popcorn and drink time.”
