Rec fee increase will help PRT programs

NEWBERRY — The increase in youth program registration fees for 2014 will help the City of Newberry’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department make some positive changes to the programs it offers — including updated uniforms and a free team photo.
Scott Sawyer, director of the PRT, said information was mailed out to last year’s participants so they would be aware of the change. In December, Newberry City Council approved the ordinance that went into effect Jan. 1.
“The increase allows us the opportunity to provide some program enhancements, like upgraded uniforms,” Sawyer said. “We’re hoping to have all of our ball teams in major league or minor league replica uniforms this spring. Their mascots and team names are a lot more fun. I think the kids will really like that.”
The new fee is $50. City residents will receive a $20 discount by providing proof of residency with a current City of Newberry electrical utility billing statement. The ordinance also included the addition of a $10 late fee as well as multi-child discounts for families with more than one child participating.
A $5 discount comes with a second child while a $10 discount is given for the third child and any additional children who are registered by the end of registrations.
The information mailed to last year’s participants explained the benefits of the new fees, appropriate proof of residency for city residents, and additional documents needed to register for sports. The registration period began Jan. 21 and runs through Feb. 14.
Registration for the Pre-T League (3-4 years) is open only for the first 48 who register. All other leagues will have children placed on teams if signed up by the registration deadline of Feb. 14, according to Sawyer. Placement on teams after the registration deadline cannot be guaranteed.
Sawyer said the uniforms will be updated to a more modern look and a free 5x7 team photo will be included for team members. Volunteer and game staff background screenings will be improved as will a national coach certification training program for coaches. Expanded player, coach, and official training/camps will be offered, according to Sawyer.
An acceptable proof of residency for the city resident discount is a current City of Newberry electrical utility bill. Additional documents needed at registration include proof of passing grades and a birth certificate.
Forms are available online at www.cityofnewberry.com/city-services and also available at the PRT office at 1323 College St.
During the registration period the drive-thru will be open until 6 p.m. For more information contact their office at 321-1015.
