NEWBERRY — Barry S. Koon of Newberry was elected Potentate of Hejaz Shriners at the annual elections held Jan. 4.
Koon was raised a Master Mason in 1993 and was created a Shriner at Hejaz Temple the same year. He has served Newberry Shrine Club and Hejaz Temple in numerous positions.
Koon was born and raised in the Prosperity area of Newberry County and graduated from Mid-Carolina High School and Francis Marion University.He is president and broker in charge of Lane Properties, a part-time magistrate for Newberry County and a Municipal Judge for the cities of Prosperity, Newberry and Whitmire.
He has served as a judge for 31 years with 19 of those years being Chief Magistrate of Newberry County. Barry and Fay Koon, a pediatric nurse at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, live in Newberry.
The Shrine Temple is located in Mauldin at 100 Ranch Road and hosts an 18 hole championship golf course on approximately 300 acres, a banquet room, and RV and camper sites with a picnic area. Hejaz Shrine has about 4,800 members.
