NEWBERRY — Newberry County Memorial Hospital plans to help you start the year off right with its 2014 Battle of the Bulge weight loss competition.
The competition begins with sign-ups Jan. 6 through Jan. 11 at the hospital’s wellness center, located in the atrium professional building next to the hospital. Participants can register from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Another registration location is at the Little Mountain family health care center, 99 North Mill St. in Little Mountain. Registration there will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 6 through Jan. 10.
Ralph Baker, employee of the hospital’s wellness center and team captain for one of the weight loss groups, said the goal of Battle of the Bulge is to help educate and hold each other accountable for weight loss goals.
The 14-week weight loss competition will include recipes for healthy eating, as well as tips for healthy weight loss, according to Baker.
Although anyone is allowed to participate, Baker said they recommend participants be 16 years of age and older. In the past, Baker said Battle of the Bulge has put participants together in a large group, but that this year, things will be different.
This year, Baker said personalized small groups will be formed, with each group having a trainer to help them along the way. Four coaches are helping train with participants, including two exercise physiologists and two exercise instructors from NCMH, with constant communication with participants in the group.
“It’s yourself competing against yourself,” Baker said about the competition.
Regular team meetings and weigh-ins will occur each week. Baker said the hope is that participants will attend a minimum of 10 out of the 14 weeks to be eligible for the prizes in the competition.
Baker said the first place prize package will include a massage gift certificate, a fruit basket, 10 30-minute training sessions, and a nine month gym membership at the hospital’s wellness center.
Second place prizes include five 30 minute training sessions and six months free gym membership. The third place prize includes a three month free gym membership. Baker said they have not discerned the overall team prize package for the winning team.
“We’ll start off big next week and we hope everyone will come out and join us,” Baker said.
