NEWBERRY — The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity recently honored seven awards to members and individuals within the community. Awards ranged from the Man of the Year to awards for service and social action.
Omega Psi Phi is a group of men that encourage high standards, community service and assist in the building of character and leadership development among men. The members of the fraternity share a common foundation lasting a lifetime. The group includes numerous men from the Newberry community.
The following individuals received awards:
Omega Man of the Year — Dr. Tim Hunter
The Omega Man of the Year is a brother who has made extraordinary contributions to his Chapter, the 6th District and the International level of the Fraternity. The Omega Man of the Year is a brother who has made significant contributions to humanity and his community. Additionally, this brother is a financial member at the Chapter, District, and International level during the year immediately prior to the award and during the award year.
Founders Award — Dr. Danny Webb
The Founders Award is a brother of chapter, district and international recognition who exhibits the highest ideals of Omega s Four Cardinal Principles — Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift. The Brother should be recognized for his contributions to society that have enhanced the welfare of mankind, both locally and nationally.
Social Action Award — John Waller
The Social Action Award is a person who exhibits the highest ideals of social action. Their programs must touch the lives of families and individuals each year.
Superior Service Award — Willie Forrest Jr.
The Superior Service Award winner must be financial; has demonstrated outstanding contribution and shown sustained concern for the activities of the Chapter, District and the Fraternity; served in a manner above and beyond the ordinary participation levels necessary to implement programs and should be involved with the organizations, planning and implementation of programs and projects; and support all Mandated Fraternity Programs
Educator of the Year — Bennie Bennett
The Educator of the Year must demonstrate academic achievement, inspiration, motivation, and uplift the community by mentoring the youth. They must have developed a reputation for delivering programs and projects that make a difference in the lives of the community.
Essay Award — Juliet Irving
The Essay award is for all college-bound, high school seniors. The essay was entitled “What Do You View as the Critical Skills Needed to be Successful in College and Beyond?”
Life Time Members Award —Dr. Danny Webb and Dr. Tim Hunter
Life Time Member must grow, preserve, and prudently manage financial resources for education, leadership development and charitable programs.
