NEWBERRY — The estranged husband of a Newberry County woman found dead in her home over the weekend has been arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with her murder, officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
Charles Butler, 76, of Chambersburg, Pa., was arrested Monday night by the Chambersburg Police Department on a warrant from Newberry County. He is being held in Chambersburg awaiting extradition to Newberry County, officials said.
Andrenna Butler, 72, of 15804 U.S. 176, was found lying in the floor of her home around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said Mrs. Butler died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said the warrant for Charles Butler’s arrest was obtained after an exhaustive investigation by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigating officers used a variety of forensic techniques to tie Butler to the crime scene in Newberry County and the murder. The couple had been married for over 50 years prior to their separation and Charles Butler moving to Pennsylvania.
Foster said incident was the result of a domestic issue stemming from that separation.
Mrs. Butler was found by a friend who became concerned after making repeated attempts to contact her by phone. Butler’s friend had last spoken to her around noon Friday.
When the friend arrived through a secure garage door and entered the garage, the friend saw Butler through the glass of an interior door.
