NEWBERRY — The downpour of rain didn’t keep hundreds of bikers from their purpose during the annual Harley Toy Run.
On Saturday afternoon, some bikers rode their bikes while others rode inside their vehicles due to the constant rain that plagued the wintry day. The bikers brought plenty of gifts to fill the Opera House lobby for the Boys Farm as well as other children in Newberry County.
For about 15 years now, bikers have come down Main Street as the kids watch. This year, the weather didn’t put a stop to the event.
Santa Claus didn’t drive in on a Harley this year but he did come with Mrs. Claus in a car waving to the kids.
Donna Wicker organizes the event gathering together bikers from around the state.
After the gifts are laid out on the tables, children lined up and picked out a toy. The remaining toys were taken to other less fortunate children around the county.
When asked why they come out, they say repeatedly that it’s “all for the kids.”
Many of the bikers don Christian verses or some sort of emblem showing them to be in a Christian biker group. They say they are just “living by example.”
A couple of biker groups also gave checks to the Boys Farm group. The boys thanked the bikers by singing a Christmas song.
