Composite issued in ‘distraction burglaries’
NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has issued a composite drawing of a man wanted for questioning in connection to his involvement in recent “distraction burglaries” in Newberry and Laurens counties.
The man, who has used the name Tom Rollins or Tom Rawlins, says he is working for the local electric companies cutting rights of way. He lures the victim out of the home while an unknown accomplice enters the home. Once inside, they have taken jewelry and other precious metals.
He is described as a white male with medium brown hair, 43 to 47 years old, standing 5-foot-9 and weighing about 200 pounds. He might have a speech impediment.
The man has worn a green safety vest and has used either a portable radio or phone to communicate with an accomplice while he is with the victim.
The two are in a burgundy pick-up truck that appears to be older. The make and model are unknown. The truck has tinted windows and might have silver down the sides and across the middle of the tailgate. A black generator or compressor is attached to the bed of the truck with an exhaust fan on the driver’s side.
If you see this vehicle or if someone fitting this description approaches your home, call 911 immediately. Do not let anyone in your home unless you know them or have called them or you have verified their identity.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office at 803-321-2222.
