NEWBERRY — The Friends of the Newberry County Library System recently presented library director Sam Ziady with a $5,000 check to go toward two computers that the Newberry Library placed in its children’s section.

Literacy computers, as Ziady likes to call them, have capabilities from educational games to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Ziady said these computers can help bridge the digital divide, seeing as not every household has access to a computer.

“Some kids aren’t ready when they enter those school house doors,” Ziady said. “These computers can really help them get started.”

Jessica Toland, the children’s librarian, said the computers are great for children ages 2 to 10.

“They really increase a child’s literacy and computer skills,” Toland said.

Faye Halfacre with the Friends of the Library group said the money given to the library was raised throughout the year through various fundraisers such as a literary luncheon and used book sale. Halfacre said the group donated $6,000 last year so the library could fund e-books.

The officers for the Friends of the Library group for 2013 include Audrey Henry, president; Jen Wicker, vice president; Sandra Oliver, secretary; and Karen Scott, treasurer.

One of the next projects the group has planned is to present the library with poinsettias, as Halfacre said they do each year around the holiday season.
