NEWBERRY — Believing that the gift of giving is better than receiving, the Newberry County Recreation Department has teamed up with the Newberry County YMCA and the Newberry County School Supply Drive to collect jackets for their Coats for Kids Drive.

Chair Gerdi Lake said the idea for the project began years ago during a cold soccer game through the recreation department.

“There were lots of kids showing up without coats,” Lake said.

Because of this, Lake said she wanted to try to help make sure no child was cold during the winter months, even in hard economic times.

“Winter weather is starting and people are scrambling to find warm coats to wear. With tougher economic times, we’re finding more people in need of warm clothing,” said Lake.

Lake said area businesses such as Aaron’s Sale and Leasing Ownership and Country Clean are participating in the coat drive. Wal-Mart has also been a big help in the past Lake said, by giving a percentage off of their merchandise for coats the group purchased as a part of the drive.

The program began Nov. 21 and will continue through Dec. 16. Lake said donors are encouraged to locate their gently used coats, have them cleaned, and then drop them off at the participating locations which include Newberry County Annex, Newberry County YMCA, Prosperity Town Center, and Aaron’s Sales and Leasing Ownership.

Because kids come in all shapes and sizes, the drive is asking for donations from youth to adult sizes. Lake said there is no set number of coats for this year’s Coats for Kids Drive. The goal is to make sure that no child in Newberry County goes cold. Those who wish to make monetary donations can make checks payable to the YMCA and drop them off there as well.

Lake said if more coats are donated than needed within the county, she has donated to other organizations in Columbia in the past, such as the Oliver Gospel Mission and Christ Central Ministries.
