NEWBERRY — Paranormal investigators are scheduled to visit downtown Newberry sometime in November, but true Newberrians have already had ghost sightings of their own.

Historian Ernie Shealy and storyteller Sue Summer have partnered up to present a special event for the Newberry Community Players on Friday and Saturday evening downtown.

Ellen Hunt with the Newberry Community Players said there will be two versions of the ghost tours each evening — family friendly ghost stories for kids at 6 p.m. and another for “big kids” or kids for all ages at 8 p.m.

Both tours will begin at the Ritz Theater, with the family friendly version staying and touring throughout the theater, while the second tour will begin at the Ritz, and continue downtown and back up Main Street.

“We’re really excited about it,” Hunt said. “Apparently there are a lot of ghosts in Newberry.”

Hunt said when she first met with Shealy and Summer, they had 20 to 25 stories they wanted to share within the second ghost tour, but had to narrow the number down.

Approximately 10 ghost stories will be shared between Shealy and Summer on the tour that travels down Main Street. Hunt said they hope this will be something that will develop such as those tours held in the Charleston area.

“People would be amazed about the ghosts known in their buildings,” Hunt said.

Tickets are only $5 for the kids ghost stories at 6 p.m. and $10 for the tour at 8 p.m. Space is limited, but tickets can be purchased by calling the Newberry Opera House Box Office at 276-6264 or purchasing online at www.newberryoperahouse.com.
