NEWBERRY — For most people, Oct. 31 is just Halloween. For Protestants however, it is the anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the church castle door in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517. This action became the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation in Europe and gave birth to many of the denominations we know today.

Lutherans celebrate the Reformation on the last Sunday of October each year to commemorate the work of Luther, Calvin, Wycliffe, Hus, and other reformers within the church.

The Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 1515 Boundary St. in Newberry, will host the Heartland Conference Reformation Service at 4 p.m. Oct. 27.

The preacher will be the Rev. Jason Antley of Mt. Olivet and Mt. Hermon Lutheran Churches in Peak. Lutheran churches from Clinton, Newberry, Silverstreet, Whitmire, Prosperity, Pomaria, Little Mountain, Chapin, Irmo, and other surrounding areas will be participating. A mass choir from area Lutheran Churches will lead the music along with the organ, trumpets and tympani.
