PROSPERITY — Giving back to the community that he says gave him so much, CJ Edwards is having his first baseball camp Oct. 12 at the Prosperity Dixie Youth baseball field. The camp will be hosted by the Prosperity Dixie Youth League.
The camp, for ages 8-12, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will receive lessons from Edwards in hitting, fielding, catching and pitching. At the end of the camp, Edwards said they might play a game if enough players participate.
Edwards said the idea for the camp came to him in the middle of this year when he was visiting some friends at home.
“I really just wanted to do something for the kids back home, the ones that look up to me,” Edwards said. “Overall, I just want them to have fun out there.”
Registration forms can for the camp can be picked up at the Prosperity Town Center. A table will also be set up to take registration the day of the camp. The fee will be $30 per participant. Checks should be made out to CJ Edwards. The funds will go directly to Edwards. If the camp is a success, Edwards said he plans to hold a similar camp in January that will be free to the public.
Assisting Edwards with the camp will be coaches Joey Long and Lindsey Stribble, and Robert Lake.
Following the completion of the camp, Edwards said he plans to talk to the participants about attributes he feels are important when playing sports and in life in general, such as working hard to achieve your goals and playing to have fun.
“When I was younger, I played to win,” Edwards said, who now believes it’s important for a player to experience losing to make them better.
Currently playing High A advanced rookie ball, Edwards pitches for the Daytona Cubs, a Chicago Cubs organization. He had a record of 8-2 with a 1.8 ERA during the regular season and a record of 2-0, with a 0 ERA and 13 strikeouts during the playoffs.
Edwards said he is looking forward to being home and helping kids in the community.
“I like working with kids,” Edwards said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
