NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Touchdown Club recognized several winners of its recent Punt, Pass and Kick competition at the September meeting. The club also honored its first players of the month from area schools.

Whitmire High’s assistant coach Chris Martin told those in attendance Monday that even though the Wolverines are 0-4, “we hit some bumps in the road but things are going in the right direction. We have a lot of young guys and not many seniors.”

Cole Miller and Alex Ellison were recognized as Players of the Month from Whitmire for September.

On Offense: Cole Miller has 13 pass receptions averaging 16 yards a catch. “He has the best vertical leap and is also a three-sport letterman,” said Martin of Miller.

On Defense: Alex Ellison is the leading rusher and leading the team in tackles who also handles the punting and kicking duties for Whitmire, according to Martin.

Mid-Carolina Head Coach Louie Alexander said “our effort level has been tremendous. We are getting better every day.”

Trimone Hall-Gantt, Ben Chandler, and Rashon Graham were recognized as Players of the Month for MCHS.

On Defense: Trimone Hall-Gantt is averaging seven tackles a game. “He gets after it as he is playing against kids a lot bigger than him,” Alexander said of Hall-Gantt.

On Offense: Ben Chandler has rushed for right at 400 yards for the Rebels and has scored two touchdowns. “He’s a leader and has done the things the right way since he was a freshman,” Alexander said.

For Special Teams: “Rashon Graham plays extremely well and brings a load,” Alexander said.

Newberry High head coach Phil Strickland feels that his Bulldogs could be a “pretty good team” if they can play “two halves of football.”

Omar Sims, Quaheim Glasgow, and Jose Lozano were recognized from Newberry High School.

On Offense: Omar Sims has rushed for over 400 yards. “He’s not very big but he has a big heart,” said Strickland.

On Defense: Quaheim Glasgow is a native of New York City and had not played football until he came to Newberry last year. “He learned to play the game very quickly,” Strickland said. Strickland noted that Glasgow has 29 tackles, four for loss, one caused fumble and has two quarterback sacks.

For Special Teams: Jose Lozano handles all of the punting and kicking duties for the Bulldogs. Lozano has made 19 of 20 extra point kicks, had a 40-yard field goal and has had three touchbacks on his kickoffs. “He lands a lot of them around the one and that’s something I like to see,” said Strickland.

Head coach Todd Knight brought three of his players from Newberry College. Byron Dickerson, Edmond Robinson, and Jason Livingston were recognized.

On Offense: Byron Dickerson from Atlanta is a “gray stripe player who also plays basketball,” said Knight. “He has made some huge catches for us.”

On Defense: Edmond Robinson from Wadmalaw Island leads the team in tackles for losses.

For Special Teams: Jason Livingston from Conway “gets it done for us who is currently fifth in the nation in punt returns. He puts us in great positions when we get the ball back,” Knight said of Livingston.

A native of Boston who currently lives on Lake Murray with his wife and daughter, guest speaker Dave DeGuglielmo earned a scholarship to Boston University after trying out for the football team as a walk-on.

Bringing his five championship rings, including his Super Bowl XVII one from the 2007 season, Coach “Guge” said he had felt the “warmth since coming to South Carolina of its people. It means a lot to my family and me,” he said.

“I’ve been blessed to have been with some great people” he said in his career including coaching under then head coach Lou Holtz at the University of South Carolina.

“When you commit yourself the right way, good things will happen,” DeGuglielmo said. “The decisions you make will define you.”
