NEWBERRY — Newberry College welcomed 329 new students this fall which represents one of the largest entering classes of new students in the history of the college.

“The new class of students has added energy, excitement and academic strength to the campus,” said Delsie Phillips, Newberry College Dean of Enrollment.

The total student enrollment including traditional students and online students is 1,041 with a 12 percent increase in new student enrollment this year. The college also saw continued improvement in student retention, as the freshmen retention rate increased again this fall.

College President Maurice W. Scherrens believes that a major reason for the growth is an increased awareness that Newberry College has become a true value proposition in higher education.

“We have leveraged an outstanding faculty, faith based learning, personal attention and competitive pricing with a promise of no tuition increases, into a challenging and rewarding educational experience that prepares our graduates well for future success,” Scherrens said.

“Along with welcoming a new class, we welcome a year of new beginnings,” said Rachel Williams, student body president.

The college is on a path of continuous improvement with the introduction of several new academic programs including Accounting, Social Media, Athletic Training and Environmental Studies. In the co-curricular area, the college added the sport of women’s field hockey, established a dance team and is expanding the marching band.

A number of capital improvements have been made, including a new entrance to Brokaw freshmen residence hall, a new coffee shop with an outdoor café dining venue in Kaufmann Hall, upgraded classrooms, completion of softball/soccer stadiums at the Smith Road Athletic Complex and a new game room in Kaufmann Hall.

Scherrens is also concluding a 30-city tour where he and his staff have been telling the “Newberry College Story” throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia.

“There is something special going on at Newberry College, so don’t miss the excitement,” said Scherrens. “Attend a fine and performing arts production, an athletic event, an FAL event or a Sunday brunch in Kaufmann Hall. There is always something going on at the campus and the Newberry Community has an open invitation.”
