NEWBERRY — Newberry High School will host the fifth annual Lorraine Paris Band Invitational Saturday in the football stadium, welcoming 1A through 4A high school marching bands.

Newberry Band Director Akeem Downs said the Blue Brigade will perform an exhibition at 9 p.m. before awards are presented but will not compete since it is hosting the event.

Bands from McBee High, Hartsville High, Laurens High, Clinton High and North Augusta High schools will participate in the clinics, which begin at noon. The last performance is at 4 p.m. and the scoring part should begin about 5:15 p.m.

The competition includes bands from Buford, Ware Shoals, Emerald, McBee, Clinton, Whitmire, Ninety Six, River Bluff, Hartsville, Laurens and North Augusta high schools.

Awards start after the competition ends about 9:15 p.m. The Lorraine Paris Invitational is one of five across the state beginning the band invitational competition.

The event honors Lorraine Paris, who taught band at the high school for 47 years. She retired in 1995 and died in 2004.

When Paris retired, she had taught as many as three generations of families. The walls of the Newberry High band room include many trophies and awards won by the Blue Brigade under Paris’s direction.

Paris received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Winthrop and a master’s degree from Furman. Her awards included the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1965, the Star Teacher in 1974 from Newberry High, Teacher of the Year for the 1980-81 school year, and Outstanding Band Director in 1982.

She also received the Order of the Palmetto and the South Carolina government dedicated a day to her in 1996.
