NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry, the Newberry County Touchdown Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Newberry County will host the NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 at Setzler Field at Newberry College.

The competition, free and open to boys and girls ages 6 to 15, allows children to showcase their talents in punting, passing, and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. Participants will be grouped based on their ages. Age classification is as of Dec. 31 of the current year.

Matt DeWitt, assistant city manager for the City of Newberry, said the event was held for many years, but was dropped at one point. The three groups decided to start it back again.

“It gives kids another avenue of something to do in Newberry,” DeWitt said.

Volunteering for the event is Sam Baird, who says they’ve really tried to get the word out to the community about this event. Baird, 60, remembers competing in the same NFL competition when he was 12 years old.

“It’s a great thing for kids,” Baird said. “It gives them something else to be involved in.”

The top finishers from each of 10 age groups will advance to a section competition, with the winners from sectionals to compete to have their scores compared with other sectional champions.

Entry forms are available online at NFLPPK.com or from the City of Newberry Recreation Department. Registration will be open until Sept. 20. For competition information, contact the City of Newberry Recreation Department at 321-1015.
