LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton identified the passenger killed in a collision on Sunday night near Little Mountain as Steve Allen Kaufmann, 26, of North Charleston.

Kaufmann was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office when the collision occurred at 6:05 p.m. Sunday on I-26 near the Lexington County line.

The autopsy was performed Monday morning revealing the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. Kaufmann was sitting in the back of the vehicle on the right side and he was wearing a seat belt.

Newton said the victim and two other friends were returning to the Charleston area from Atlanta, Ga. after a weekend trip. The driver and the other passenger were taken to Columbia area hospitals for treatment.

The collision remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Newberry Coroners Office. Traffic control assistance was provided by the Newberry County Sheriffs Department.
