POMARIA — Christian Eugene Pearson, 43, died from a drowning incident at Heller’s Creek in the Pomaria area Saturday afternoon, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton released Pearson’s name Sunday after an autopsy was performed and the victim’s family was notified. The cause of death is asphyxia caused by drowning.

Pearson was reported missing around 1:30 p.m. Saturday and his body was found around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to the sheriff’s office, Pearson was on an outing with family members at the Heller’s Creek recreation area and walked and waded from the shallow to deeper waters at the bridge on Broad River Road in Newberry County.

Once he was in deeper waters, the victim began experiencing difficulties and slipped under water. Family members attempted to find and rescue him.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation and foul play is not a suspect.

Divers from SCDNR, Newberry County Water Rescue and Union County Water Rescue found the body near where he slipped from sight, according to the sheriff’s office.
