NEWBERRY — Nate Bernardo of Newberry County was recently named vice chairman of the Eat Smart Move More Newberry County group.
Eat Smart Move More is a South Carolina initiative broken up into smaller groups within the state. Bernardo said the Newberry County coalition is working on making workplaces smoke free and looking at issues from a nutritional aspect, such as preserving the health quality of life for the community.
Graduating from Furman University this year, Bernardo has come back home to Newberry. He works at Newberry County Memorial Hospital on the weekends and Park Sterling Bank during the week while also working with Eat Smart Move More.
Bernardo got started with ESMM because of his father’s involvement with the group. When the most recent turnover for positions was held, Bernardo was nominated for the vice chairman position.
With this position, Bernardo is responsible for promoting ESMM, getting information out to the community on what the program is about and how Newberry as a whole can be a healthier place.
Having studied health sciences at Furman, Bernardo feels this will coincide with what he learned while in college. Currently, Bernardo is working on a brochure for the public.
“The purpose of the brochure is to let the community know about Eat Smart Move More, and to get them on board,” Bernardo said.
Because he grew up in the Newberry community, Bernardo said his goal is to make his own community better and to see great people get involved with the program.
“I enjoy being able to work toward something for Newberry as a whole,” Bernardo said.
Eat Smart Move More will be involved in health fairs during September and October. More information on those can be found at www.eatsmartmovemoresc.org/newberrycounty.
