NEWBERRY — Brandan Davis, former USC Gamecock football player, will host his second football camp on June 27 at Newberry High School.

Davis started his foundation The Faithful Walk-On in February 2012 with the publishing of his first book, The Faithful Walk-On. Davis describes the book as his testimony of how he walked onto the Gamecock football team in 2008 by the grace of God.

Davis, 26, graduated from The University of South Carolina with a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies. He played football for the Gamecocks for three years.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. June 17 for ages 7-18. The camp will start at 9:30 a.m. and finish at noon. The cost is $5 per person.

The funds raised from the camp will go toward other camps and will be invested back into the community to help athletes become successful, Davis said. They will also be invested back into his foundation and used to help buy more equipment.

The foundation’s motto is Making A Difference, Davis said.

“Every time we have a camp we want to make a difference in some young athlete’s life,” he said.

Last year’s camp had three phases — football fundamental skills, a sharing of Davis’ testimony and a challenge for participants to make football and educational goals for the upcoming year.

Davis said this year will be similar, but would include more exciting things and drills for the athletes to experience.

“My job as founder and CEO of this foundation is to help every young person become an elite athlete in the classroom and on the field,” Davis said.

Davis said participants would be doing various football drills and learning ways to become an elite athlete on the field.

Because of the summer temperatures, Davis said Gatorade and water will be provided for participants. Having experienced dehydration personally, Davis said he has scheduled mandatory water breaks throughout the camp so there are no issues.

“I will make sure each athlete hydrates themselves,” Davis said.

In the event of rain, Davis said the camp will be delayed until it stops raining.

Davis said the success of the camp helped him start one-on-one workouts that consist of agility footwork drills and lifting weights. Davis said he considers the workouts to be another ministry to the community and another way for him to mentor and help athletes become successful on and off the field.

“I want to help the youth of Newberry succeed,” Davis said. “I want to share the tools I have learned to help them become successful.”

Davis said he has been attending church in Newberry since birth and considers Newberry his second home.

“Newberry is a town full of talented individuals and I just want to help each athlete be the best at all they do,” Davis said.

Davis is now a graduate student at the University of South Carolina and is getting his Master of Arts of Teaching, with an emphasis on physical education. His goal is to become a full-time teacher and coach.
