NEWBERRY — What are married couples really like behind closed doors? This February, The Newberry Community Players will bring a dinner theater musical that follows a couple through 50 years of marriage.

In “I Do, I Do,” Agnes and Michael Snow sing about their relationship from the first blush of love and those little things that drive you crazy to bringing the romance back later in life.

With lyrics from Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, “I Do, I Do” is the musical version of Jan de Hartog’s play “The Fourposter.” The most famous of the songs from the production is “My Cup Runeth Over With Love,” which was made famous when recorded by both Ed Ames and Robert Goulet.

“The play is set from the 1890s to the 1940s, but it feels really modern in it’s honesty about living with another person as your mate. I’m very excited to have two twenty-something’s play the roles, I know they will bring great energy to the musical,” said director Ellen Hunt.

Cast

Agnes Snow will be portrayed by Newberry College student Crystal Boyl. Boyl has performed with the Newberry College Theatre and the Newberry College opera class. Travis Burton takes on the role of Michael Snow. He was last seen on the stage in 2008 when portrayed Troy Bolton in NCP’s stage version of “High School Musical.” He got his start in the theater, however, with Ellen Hunt’s Imagination Alley Children’s Theater.

Production

The Newberry Community Players’ production of “I Do, I Do” will be presented at the Newberry Community Hall, 1209 Caldwell St., in Downtown Newberry on Feb. 8, Feb. 9, Feb. 15 and Feb. 16. Saturday productions are at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday’s matinees are at 1 p.m. The event is designed as if the attendees are at the couple’s anniversary reception and will include gourmet appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

Tickets are $42 for adults — meal included with cash bar. Groups of 10 or more are $35. Advance tickets are recommended as there is limited seating. Tickets can be purchased through the Newberry Opera House Box Office at 803-276-6264 or online at www.newberryoperahouse.com.
