MYRTLE BEACH — Ninety-six Mid-Carolina Middle School students along with 10 Jr. Beta Club sponsors returned Jan. 15 from the S.C. Jr. Beta Convention in Myrtle Beach.

Out of 50 schools and nearly 4,000 students, 19 Mid-Carolina Middle School students won 11 awards.

Seventh grader Ella DeNicola was elected S.C. Jr. Beta Club State Secretary.

“It was an amazing opportunity. I got to meet new people as I campaigned and try new things like giving a speech,” she said. “I had a great time with all my friends in MCMS Beta. I am proud to be the new S.C. Jr. Beta Club Secretary and to represent my state.”

Each candidate who ran needed a publicity skit to help promote their campaign. DeNicola’s skit was a choreographed dance to a remix of the popular singer Rhiana’s “Umbrella” song.

The skit took first place and included Jessica Franklin, Eliza McManus, Lani Fulmer, Reagan Peel, Carolyne Hornsby, Hannah Cook, Abby Berry, Addison Bowers, Al Farmer, Harmon Vinson, Ian Willets, and Jacob Sease.

“Representing Ella DeNicola in the Jr. Beta Club Campaign Skit was an amazing opportunity,” said Addison Bowers. “I was so overwhelmed when we won first place because of my love of dance and dancing beside my group members in the dance skit.”

Eighth grader Taylor Carpenter took second place in cross-stitch for the second year in a row. “This was my second year winning a state award in cross-stitch,” Carpenter said. “I am so excited about going back to Nationals and representing my school.”

The state essay and social studies winner was Drew Bunce.

Other individual school winners included Bailey Stuck, first place quilt; Abby Stutts, first place T-shirt design; Mid-Carolina Middle School, first place arts and crafts sweepstakes (for most art/craft awards); Emma Fulmer, third place Recyclable Art; Madison Elkins, third place oil/acrylic painting; Mid-Carolina Middle School, G.O.L.D Key Award for 10 percent or more growth in Convention Attendance.

All state award winners have been invited to compete in the National Jr. Beta Club Convention in New Orleans, La., in June.
