NEWBERRY COUNTY — A man wanted on multiple charges stemming from a shooting was arrested in Abbeville earlier this week after investigators from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office tracked him there.

Maurice Vandell Bailey, 28 of 102 Ashton Road, Newberry, was arrested Tuesday morning and brought back to Newberry County, where he is being held. His bond has not yet been set.

Investigators from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Abbeville County saw Bailey in a vehicle on S.C. 28 in Abbeville County and stopped the vehicle. Bailey was taken into custody without incident. He was armed with a .380-caliber pistol when he was arrested.

Bailey was charged by the Newberry Police Department with three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

He faces a forgery charge by the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and a probation violation by the S.C. Department of Probation, Pardon, and Parole.

Bailey is on probation for possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He was also charged with a General Sessions bench warrant for failure to appear in court, where he has pending charges for distribution of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine within proximity of a park or school, and unlawful carrying of a pistol.

Sheriff Lee Foster said the attempted murder charge stems from an incident when Bailey shot at a car on Taylor Street in Newberry. A woman and a child were in the vehicle at the time.

“It is clear that this man is a danger to the community and we simply could not allow him to remain at large,” said Foster. “I commend all of the efforts of those involved for working so hard to take the suspect into custody. We cannot and will not allow criminals with guns to run our streets.”
